Teacher Workshop – Holocaust Education Mandate

In 1994, the State of Florida mandated the teaching of the Holocaust in public school in kindergarten through 12th grade.

Florida Statute 1003.42(f) The history of the Holocaust (1933-1945), the systematic planned annihilation of European Jews and other groups by Nazi Germany, a watershed event in the history of humanity, to be taught in a manner that leads to an investigation of human behavior, an understanding of the ramifications of prejudice, racism, and stereotyping, and an examination of what it means to be a responsible and respectful person, for the purposes of encouraging tolerance of diversity in a pluralistic society and for nurturing and protecting democratic values and institutions.

Since 2001, The Holocaust Museum & Education Center of Southwest Florida has been assisting teachers in meeting that mandate. Beginning with about 1,200 Collier County students per school year, the Museum now reaches an average of 15,000 students, K – university, throughout Charlotte, Collier, Glades, Hendry, Lee Counties each year.

This year, the Museum is offering teacher workshops in partnership with Florida SouthWestern State College to assist teachers in delving into the mandate and using the resources of the Museum to meet it.  Workshops are free and open to all teachers in Southwest Florida, public, private and homeschool.  Registration is required.
